At the heart of Burning Monkey is the story of a disenchanted young man who is searching for a better life, and his girlfriend, who has her own dreams. There is also a stranger, a grown up with a past who has a sad story to reveal. The drama raises issues about an individual’s responsibility to himself and to others, with emphasis, perhaps on the responsibilities that come with being a parent. It also raises the question – what is a true badge of honour – an ASBO, as the young man in this drama boasts, or a war medal as earned by the old soldier?
